... probably I was only six. And I was sitting, watching the water boil to make macaroni and cheese, my favorite food. I was taking notes about the process of water boiling. How long does it take, what does it look like in the beginning? Those little bubbles, how they turn into bigger bubbles? Pouring the macaroni in. How it starts foaming? I was treating macaroni and cheese like an experiment. I grew up with a deep appreciation for the scientific method and the power of asking questions. The Science Talent Search helped me understand that someone with an idea who could ask questions and follow through, even if they're an outsider, even if they're inexperienced, can really make a huge impact.

My name is Hayley Barna. I was immediately hooked on the impact that I was able to have through doing research as a young person. And the confidence I got from my experience through STS as a young woman in science was life changing.
