Eye on the Experts: Regeneron Perspectives on Ophthalmology Innovation

April 24, 2025

Sharing our scientific approach and lessons learned as we look toward the future.

By: Regeneron Editorial

Vision-threatening conditions can severely impact independence and quality of life, affecting the ability to read, drive and even recognize loved ones. Since launching our first ophthalmology clinical development program in 2004, our groundbreaking science has helped transform the treatment of certain retinal diseases, including wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, macular edema following retinal vein occlusion and retinopathy of prematurity.

When diagnosed with these serious diseases twenty-five years ago, people often expected to face severe visual impairment or even blindness, but fortunately today, patients have options to help maintain or even restore their vision.

We’re proud of our pioneering advancements in ophthalmology and our collaborative approach to supporting the retinal community that has helped make a real difference for patients.

Today, we’re building on our leadership in angiogenesis by investigating ways to potentially address additional serious eye diseases. It is the collective expertise of individuals across this field — from our passionate leaders at Regeneron to the eye care professionals and organizations we collaborate with — that drives groundbreaking progress.

Sharing Insights from the Past to Inform the Future

We recognize that the field is always evolving with new-to-practice eye care professionals who may be familiar with our treatments, but not our deep-rooted history and approach to scientific innovation in this space. Our team’s extensive experience from two decades of research provides valuable insights for those with the shared mission of advancing care for patients with serious eye diseases. Our new series, Eye on the Experts, shares perspectives behind our approach to clinical innovation, featuring some of our leading ophthalmology experts.

Eye on the Experts covers topics intended to serve as helpful resources for the community, including new-to-practice retina specialists who are just beginning their professional journeys. Expect to hear:

  • Reflections on Regeneron’s early days of research
  • Background on how we design and execute clinical trials in ophthalmology, including incorporating patient input
  • How we’re building on our legacy of innovation to continue driving meaningful change for patients
  • Tips for maximizing professional experiences at medical congresses
